In English - Rubber

Here is a definition of poetry provided by the poet Louis Simpson:

"Whatever it is, it must have
A stomach that can digest
Rubber, coal, uranium, moons, poems"

In limba româna - Descalecare

Sa vorbim un pic despre cuvantul descalecare intr-unul din sensurile lui importante in limba romana (in opinia mea) - acela de intemeiere.

Gheorghe Ureche scrie  in "Letopisetul Tarii Moldovei"despre descalecarea diverselor zone romanesti care

In English - Youth Perpetual

"Youth perpetual dwells in fountains"

Much to my surprise, I have run into a verse by Henry Longfellow in a beautiful small town at a fountain.

I was so taken aback by this discovery, that for a moment it was unclear what moved me most - the poet's words, the idea that someone had thought to place them there, or the mere fact that I was alive and was there to read them.

In limba româna - praf si pulbere

"Poetul ca şi soldatul
nu are viaţă personală.

In English - Some Other Garden...

...it's actually the title of a perfect poetry book by Jane Urquhart.

Some Other Garden
is a cycle of poems that move through invented gardens and pulsing tropes.

Here is the link to one of the poems in the book:-->link

In limba româna - Grai valah

Care e esenta graiului valah in poezie?
Cine poate furniza o noua definitie dupa Vasile Voiculescu?

In English - Untune

The ending of John Dryden's well known A Song for St. Cecilia's Day, 1687:

"And Music shall untune the sky!".

Nothing else can be said, and not much can be sung after this poem's thunderous ending.

Silence may now reign in its muffled aftermath.

In limba româna - Bucegii

In English - Blunted

From Sir Walter Raleigh's Epitaph on the Earl of Leicester:

" Here lies the noble Warrior that never blunted sword;
Here lies the noble Courtier that never kept his word;"

Somehow, from this description it is easy to believe that the Earl of Leicester was a man with which the word blunted could hardly be associated - all angles, all sharp edges and pinpoint bursts of character - utterly complex, in short.

We do not know for certain whether the poem belongs to Sir Walter Raleigh which makes the Earl's description even more problematic if we ever wanted to assign some grain of poetic truth to it.

In limba româna - Tuturiga

Quelquefois

On est
quelquefois
aussi différent

de soi même

que des autres.

In English - Antlers

"Now we have clashed our antlers. This is the necessary prelude; the salute of old friends."

A sonorous (to use another word from Virginia Woolf's The Waves) prelude is introduced in this visual image from a book of poetry unjustly called a novel.

In limba româna - Cărare

"Când cu gene ostenite sara suflu-n lumânare,
Doar ceasornicul urmează lung-a timpului cărare,"

Versuri eminesciene

In English - Kesh water

"And trickles of kesh water, sphagnum moss"

I am not able to escape Seamus Heaney’s poetry tonight so I might as well go on.

Kesh water.

Kesh – a word appearing in several of Seamus Heaney’s poems. The quote above is from The Tollund Man in Springtime.

Here is a translation of the word kesh found through Google books -
The origin and history of Irish names of places by Patrick Weston Joyce (on page 361)

“A kesh …is a causeway made of wickerwork …across a small river, a marsh or a deep bog”.

Or a large wicker basket, something to measure with.

As well, found a review of Seamus Heaney's “District and Circle” by Michael Schneider through a search on ‘kesh water’.

In English - In Earshot of

In earshot of…and eye at …

Two syntagmas frequently used in Seamus Heaney’s poems to position the reader for the ensuing metaphors.

From Squarings/I Lightnings/iv

“It was like the steady message in a shell
Held to the ear in earshot of the sea."

From The Tollund Man in Springtime

“My eye at turf level. Its snailskin lid.”

I have to stop here or else I will never stop talking about Seamus Heaney’s poetry - immensely beautiful.

In limba româna - Dedus

http://www.poeziile.com/autori/Ion-Barbu/joc-secund---48.php

In English - Petrol blue

While aimlessly surfing the net, I stumbled upon Dr. Graham Mort's website and clicked through to this memorable poem - Visibility. Here is the link http://www.transculturalwriting.com/Content/Gallery/Contents/Visibility.html

I knew nothing about Dr. Mort when I first read the poem. The poem left me numb with the desire to read it again. Difficult to extract words out of Visibility as the incision would possibly mar the delicate balance of the whole.

I settled on the following:
"the cold-pressed oils of heather filling
each print with petrol blue."

Later on I read a review of the Dr Mort's book by Sarah Crow: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2007/nov/03/featuresreviews.guardianreview32 but I disagree with some of the comments made there. The hidden musical influence in Dr Mort's poetry may be at first glimpse Ted Hughes, however, later on, one might discover a more intimate affinity - Seamus Heaney (The Tollund Man in Spring).

Appearances can be deceiving however, so best take the time to read the poem on your own terms.

In limba româna - Moldova

In English - Forest

Forest - one of the most celebrated words in English, that may elicit a plethora of literary associations.
Here is a possible one: "I imagine this midnight moment's forest" - the beginning of Ted Hughes' poem The Thought-Fox.

In limba româna - Taind

In Amurg de iarna, George Bacovia creeaza o imagine memorabila in versurile

"Vâslind, un corb incet vine din fund
Taind orizontul diametral"
